Third Sunday of Lent. The Cleansing of the Temple.

Third Sunday of Lent.

The Cleansing of the Temple.

The third Sunday of Lent gives us a very different picture of Jesus from the meek and mild. Coming to the temple in Jerusalem he found the place full of traders. Making a whip out of cord he proceeded to throw them out.

The image of Jesus we have affects the way we relate to him, with the ten commandments as the first reading and the cleansing of the temple as the Gospel, we might be asking ourselves, what needs to be cleansed from my life this Lent?

As you begin these reflections each day spend a few moments repeating the phrase “Speak Lord, your servant it listening.” Then read the short passage from Sunday’s readings until you have memorised it. Read the questions and give yourself time to deeply consider your response. Once you have reflected for a few minutes, speak to the Lord, as you would to a friend, about what you have reflected upon.

Sunday.

God spoke all these words. He said, ‘I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no gods except for me. (Exodus 20:1-3)

  • What has the Lord your God done for you?
  •  How have you experienced liberation in your life?
  •  What other things can easily become a god for you?
  •  What word is God speaking to you now?

Monday.

Honour your father and mother so that you may have a long life in the land that the Lord your God has given you. (Exodus 20:12)

  • How do you honour your family?
  •  Why does God like the blessing of a long life with honouring the family?
  •  Think about your parents. Thank the Lord for the blessings you received through them.
  •  What blessing does God desire to give you just now?

Tuesday.

You, Lord, have the message of eternal life. (John 6:68)

  • How do you picture eternal life?
  • How did you first come to an awareness of the Lord’s promise?
  •  Have you shared that message of eternal life with anyone?
  •  What message does the Lord have for you just now?

Wednesday.

The precepts of the Lord are right, they gladden the heart. The command of the Lord is clear, it gives light to the eyes. (Psalm 18:9)

  • As you reflect on the commandments, how do they gladden your heart?
  •  How to the commandments give light to your eyes?
  •  Are you clear on the rightness of the commandments?
  •  What commandment does the Lord want you to listen to now?

Thursday.

Christ who is the power and the wisdom of God. For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.  (1 Corinthians 1:24-25)

  • When have known the power of God working in your life?
  •  What seems foolishness or weakness in God?
  •  What conventional human wisdom is confounded by God’s wisdom?
  •  What weakness of yours needs God’s strength just now?

Friday

Making a whip out of some cord, he drove them all out of the temple, cattle and sheep as well, scattered the money changers’ coins, knocked their tables over and said to the pigeon-sellers ‘Take all this out of here and stop turning my Father’s house into a market. (John 2:15-16)

  • How does the image of Jesus with a whip feel as you reflect on it?
  •  What would Jesus want you to clear out of your life?
  •  What is the significance of describing the temple as ‘my Father’s house’
  •  What is the Lord saying to you now?

Saturday

He never needed evidence about any man; he could tell what a man had in him. (John 2:25)

  • What do you have in you?
  •  What is the evidence of your life?
  •  How does the knowledge that the Lord knows you completely make you feel?
  •  How is the Lord looking at you just now?
